Portrait Sculpture in Bronze

Linda Preble McVay is an American portrait sculptor, known for capturing the spirit and expression of the people she sculpts. Linda’s sculpture and medals have been juried into shows in both the United States and Europe. Two of her bronze three inch medals have been juried into the 6th International Biennal of Contemporary Medals, Seixal, Portugal, which will take place from April 17 to June 10, 2010. They have also been selected as part of the US Delegation to the XXXI Federation Internationale de la Me daille d’Art (FIDEM) Congress which will take place in Tampere, Finland in June 2010. Three of her medals were exhibited in the Numismatic Exhibition at the Belskie Museum of Arts and Science in Closter, New Jersey from September 13th to November 10th, 2009. In 2008 she was invited to submit an Obama Medal to the Inaugural Committee. The limited edition of fifty struck medals sold out and of those, the allocation to collectors nation wide sold in one hour. Also in 2008 her bronze relief of “The Good Samaritan” was installed in the Lady Chapel, Christ Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, NH. In addition, a photograph of Linda’s life-size bust, “Promise” was selected by New England Sculpture Services to promote portrait sculptors.

Linda has studied with Daniel Altshuler, Eugene Daub, Philippe Faraut, and Merlin Szasz. She is represented by The Walsingham Gallery in Newburyport, MA. Her work can be found in private collections throughout the country. Linda lives in Portsmouth, NH and has a studio at Sanctuary Arts in Eliot, Maine.

  Artist’s Statement

My concentration has been portrait busts, medals and reliefs. Inspiration has come from Houdon, Carpeaux, Saint-Gaudens and Grafly. Although some of my work is life-size, I have also created smaller busts, reliefs and medals for display on mantels, bookshelves, table tops and gardens. My goal is to capture the expression in the moment that is both familiar and appealing. I enjoy sculpting in the round. However, my heart is in the medal.
