Portrait Sculpture in Bronze

Linda Preble McVay is an American portrait and medals sculptor, known for capturing the spirit and expression of the people she sculpts. Linda’s sculpture and medals have been juried into shows in both the United States and Europe. Two of her bronze three inch medals, “Caroline” and “Saint George and the Dragon”, were juried into the 6th International Biennal of Contemporary Medals, Seixal, Portugal in 2010. They were also selected as part of the USA Delegation to the XXXI Federation Internationale de la Medaille d’Art (FIDEM) Congress which took place in Tampere, Finland in 2010. They were exhibited in the Numismatic Exhibition at the Belskie Museum of Arts and Science in Closter, New Jersey in 2009. Linda has studied with Daniel Altshuler, Eugene Daub, Philippe Faraut, and Merlin Szasz. Her work can be found in private collections throughout the country. Linda lives in Portsmouth, NH and has a studio at Sanctuary Arts in Eliot, Maine.

  Artist’s Statement

My concentration has been portrait busts, medals and reliefs. Inspiration has come from Houdon, Carpeaux, Saint-Gaudens and Grafly. Although some of my work is life-size, I have also created smaller busts, reliefs and medals for display on mantels, bookshelves, table tops and gardens. My goal is to capture the expression in the moment that is both familiar and appealing. I enjoy sculpting in the round. However, my heart is in the medal. As medalists are expressing themselves by pushing the boundaries of what constitutes a medal, I have chosen to take a more traditional approach.
